Punny Stamp Collection
In this project, we were asked to design and illustrate a collection of 4 postage stamps that were visually connected by one or more elements of art such as: style, or colour. I chose a more playful route and designed a collection of pun stamps.
Catfish
I chose to create a catfish stamp for my pun collection because the idea of combining a cute cat with a fish felt both playful and visually unexpected. I started by sketching different ways the two forms could merge while still keeping the pun instantly recognizable. The final stamp brings the joke to life with a clean, bold design that’s fun to use and even more fun to spot.
Hot Dog
I created the hot dog stamp by merging a dachshund with a classic bun to highlight the playful double meaning of the pun. I explored several variations to find the right balance between the dog’s long body and the rounded bun shape. After refining the proportions and adding small details like the wagging tail and some sesame seeds on the bun, the concept really came together. The final stamp captures the humour of the pun in a clean, charming design that feels instantly recognizable.
Bookworm
I chose the bookworm stamp because the image of a friendly worm happily reading felt like the perfect visual pun for my collection. I considered having the worm coming out of a book, however, I chose this one to make it a more simple look. After refining the smaller details, the character started to feel lively and engaging. The final design brings the pun to life with a playful, whimsical charm that fits perfectly in the series.
Holy Cow
I chose the holy cow stamp because the mix of a calm cow and a heavenly twist made the pun too fun to resist. I began by sketching a clear, simple cow shape and adding a halo to bring the joke to life. From there, I refined the overall look to keep it clean and easy to recognize at a glance. The final design feels lighthearted and fits perfectly with the playful spirit of the collection. My favourite of the collection!
