For this project we had to design 12 cards: the Joker, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, and a number card for 2 suits, one black and one red. I wanted to try something fun and challenging to me. Immediately I thought back to the artist Romero Britto and knew that I wanted to incorporate that style into my own work. It’s an overall fun and quirky art style so I wanted to keep that with my characters for each card. I’ve never played around with the 3D effects and the inflation tool before but I really liked the final effect it gave. I’m incredibly happy with the outcome of this assignment and hope to potentially use them as actual playing cards in the future.
Red Suit
My red-suit cards burst with Britto inspired energy, blending bold lines with vibrant, joyful colour blocks. Each illustration feels playful and modern, capturing a sense of movement and optimism. The palette turns every card into a tiny piece of pop-art that stands out instantly in the deck.
Black Suit
For the black suit cards, I shifted into a refined greyscale to create a striking contrast within the deck. The monochrome tones highlight the structure and pattern work, giving these cards a sleek, contemporary edge. Their clean aesthetic balances the vibrancy of the red suit while maintaining a cohesive artistic style.
